The Green Party conference in Brighton has voted that Zionism is racism: 1,022 for, 813 against. Members also rejected a safeguard for Jews who belong to a synagogue that calls itself Zionist. Outside the hall, people chanted that Zionists were not welcome.
If you have a badge, wear it today and tomorrow. Not as a foreign-policy statement. As a neighbour’s answer. British Jews still have friends in Britain. They still belong here.

For those of you who own an I Stand With British Jews badge: this is the day to wear it. Let’s show the Greens that, despite their best efforts, British Jews still have friends in Britain. Still belong here. Still have a place in their home, and ours.

Conference adopted the motion and committed the party to a single Palestinian state “in all of historic Palestine”. Four of the party’s five MPs had opposed it. Deputy leader Rachel Millward called the wording problematic. It passed anyway. The party’s own statement is here. The BBC report is here.

Since Oliver Cromwell allowed Jews to settle again in England, Britain has been a refuge — imperfect, but an island redoubt in the worst of times, compared with its European neighbours. A major party has now decided that the ordinary Jewish belief in a Jewish state is racism. Why do we never learn the lessons of history?
